How the Foundry Operates

Explosive Tension simulates valve management in a Victorian-era foundry built inside an active volcano. Your console controls three gas lines feeding a high-pressure furnace system. Each valve wheel responds with realistic physics: swipe right to open flow, left to restrict it. The pressure gauge monitors total system load, climbing whenever valves stay open.

Orders arrive constantly, demanding precise ratios of sulfur, steam, and ash. Sulfur settles slowly and holds steady. Steam reacts instantly but drains fast. Ash accumulates unpredictably and resists reduction. In Inferno mode, slag enters the system and cannot be purged, forcing continuous compensation across other gases.

Failures cascade without warning. A coupling leak forces manual cranking. Dark sensors hide readings behind question marks. Creeping spindles open valves automatically. Surges force-feed gas until you triple-tap to cut the line. The repair board descends mid-shift, demanding fixes while orders continue. Every decision compounds.

Core Control Systems

Three-Valve Console

Swipe valve wheels left to close, right to open. Each gas responds with unique physics. Sulfur stabilizes slowly. Steam drains fast. Ash resists reduction. Watch chamber indicators glow as mixtures change.

Pressure Risk Mechanics

Open valves raise system pressure. Operate above 60% for 1.5× payment. Push above 75% for 2× rewards. Hit redline and the system breaches, ending your shift immediately. Risk versus reward at every moment.

Progressive Failure Types

Seized valves lock mid-shift. Couplings leak until cranked tight. Sensors go dark, hiding critical readings. Spindles creep open automatically. Surges force-feed gas requiring rapid triple-tap cuts. Complexity scales relentlessly.

Repair Board Interface

Flip breakers, hold blown fuses, crank loose couplings while orders keep arriving. The repair board descends without pausing gameplay. Fix equipment under pressure or watch tolerances slip as faults multiply across systems.

Four Escalating Shifts

STEADY introduces core mechanics with stable gas behavior. UNSTABLE adds equipment faults and tighter tolerances. MELTDOWN brings rapid order changes and cascading failures. INFERNO introduces slag that cannot be purged.

Endless Scoring Challenge

One persistent score across all sessions. Orders arrive continuously with progressively narrower tolerances. No levels, no completion screen. Only the question: how long can you maintain control before pressure wins?

Advanced Gameplay Systems

Valve Dynamics

  • Sulfur has high inertia and slow response time, but once set it holds position reliably
  • Steam reacts instantly to valve changes but drains quickly, requiring constant attention
  • Ash accumulates in irregular bursts and resists reduction efforts across all valve positions
  • Slag appears only in INFERNO mode, building steadily with no purge option available
  • Chamber indicators glow different colors corresponding to real-time gas saturation levels

Fault Management

  • Seized valves freeze at current position until manually freed via repair board
  • Coupling leaks waste gas until cranked, requiring continuous hold during repair
  • Dark sensors replace percentage readouts with question marks, forcing blind control
  • Creeping spindles open valves autonomously, demanding constant correction
  • Surge events force-feed gas into lines, stopped only by three rapid screen taps
